Reducing hidden electric heating consumption

Renergia analysed an office building where electricity use was higher than expected. The goal was to understand where the unnecessary consumption came from and what actions could reduce it.

9,720 kWh saved Observed saving from analysed periods
€3,026 saved Observed financial impact from analysed periods
€16,145 potential savings Estimated impact for the full cold season, November–March
€4,057 potential annual savings Estimated year-round impact from boiler automation

Context

The building already had energy data available, but the source of the unnecessary consumption was not clear from the total consumption alone.

Renergia reviewed the monitored data across the cold season and focused on three electric thermal loads:

Hallway electric radiators

Analysed period:
08 January – 31 March 2026

Electric water boilers

Analysed period:
02 February – 31 March 2026

Central electric heating unit

Analysed period:
21 February – 08 March 2026

What Renergia found

Several systems were running continuously or almost continuously, including outside the useful operating schedule.

This created avoidable energy costs, especially during off-hours, nights, and periods when the building did not need the same level of electric heating.

What we did

Renergia identified the systems responsible for the waste and recommended practical corrective actions.

01

Radiators

Introduced a clearer operating procedure.

02

Boilers

Added automation to reduce unnecessary operation.

03

Heating unit

Installed thermostat control to reduce continuous heating.

Before vs. after

Average off-hours consumption decreased after the actions were applied.

Hallway radiators

−66.3%
Before
1.79 kWh/h
After
0.28 kWh/h

Electric boilers

−96.3%
Before
1.0 kWh/h
After
0.06 kWh/h

Central heating unit

−54.7%
Before
25.4 kWh/h
After
10.4 kWh/h

What we achieved

The building reduced unnecessary electric thermal consumption and lowered imported energy costs.

Observed savings from analysed periods 9,720 kWh · €3,026
Estimated average cold-season month 10,429 kWh · €3,229
Estimated full cold-season impact (Nov–Mar) 52,143 kWh · €16,145
Estimated year-round boiler impact 12,807 kWh · €4,057

Why it matters

Renergia did not only show that the building was consuming too much electricity. It helped identify where the waste came from, what actions were needed, and how much impact those actions created.

The result was a clearer path from energy data to operational decisions, lower costs, and better building performance.
