Electrica, Renergia and UTCN develop Romania's first AI-powered virtual energy manager for buildings
The AIAE project, developed together with Electrica and the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, transforms complex energy data into recommendations, forecasts and concrete actions for improving building performance.
Renergia has contributed to the successful completion of AIAE — Artificial Intelligence for Active Energy Management, the first AI-powered virtual energy manager designed for buildings in Romania.
Developed in partnership with Electrica and the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, the project demonstrates how artificial intelligence can support a more active, predictive and efficient approach to energy management.
Turning real-time data into better energy decisions
AIAE analyses energy consumption in real time, identifies patterns and detects abnormal behaviour that could indicate inefficiencies, technical issues or unnecessary consumption.
But monitoring is only the starting point. The platform translates data into practical recommendations that help building teams understand what is happening, why it is happening and what actions they can take.
The solution supports:
- Detection of consumption anomalies
- Optimisation of energy self-consumption
- Reduction of energy use and associated carbon emissions
- Forecasting of energy consumption and production

Validated in real buildings
The first results were obtained at Electrica's headquarters, where the technology was tested in a real operational environment.
The solution is also being used at the “Prof. Eng. Dimitrie Leonida” National Technical Museum, making it the second building in Romania to benefit from this type of intelligent energy management technology.
These implementations helped move the project beyond the conceptual stage, demonstrating how AI can deliver tangible value in the day-to-day operation of buildings.
Technology built on research and collaboration
The scale of the development reflects both the technical complexity of the project and the strength of the collaboration behind it.
During the development process:
- Nearly 48 million datasets were processed
- More than one million lines of code were developed
- Three doctoral candidates and four researchers under the age of 30 contributed to the project
This combination of industry expertise, academic research and real-world implementation created a solid foundation for a solution capable of supporting complex energy-management decisions.
